The Motor Housing is made of aluminum die-cast parts mass-produced for industrial motor manufacturers. The part has a lightweight frame, end plates and heat sink. The end result is a reduction in operating temperature and motor vibration, thus extending motor life.

How Aluminum Motor Housings are Made?

Aluminum motor casing die-casting process

The aluminum alloy is first examined and then analyzed for chemical composition using a spectrometer. Next, the alloy is melted by heating it to a temperature of approximately 680ºC and then injecting it into the die-casting machine's mold. After cooling, the shell is removed and deburred using pneumatic tools. The shell is then shot blasted, machined and hand finished to ensure a smooth, uniform surface free of burrs.

The aluminum Motor Housings are inductively heated to expand the diameter and then the windings are placed; as the housings cool, they are locked into place. Make sure that the inside diameter of the housing (6.286- 6.288) is strictly within specifications, as the motor will fail if the housing size is too large. Therefore, we measure the diameters of the four mounting holes with dimensions 8.39 ~ 8.63.

What are the reasons for choosing aluminium Motor Housings?

There are several considerations for using aluminium Motor Housings.

1. Aluminium is less dense and can reduce the weight of the whole machine.

2. The thermal conductivity of aluminium is better than that of iron, which facilitates the heat dissipation of the motor.

3. The low strength of aluminium makes it easy to process and manufacture, saving processing costs.

The heat dissipation coefficient of aluminium is much better than cast iron. Easy to process but more expensive, but mechanical strength and hardness is not as good as cast iron. The output torque of the motor is higher with a base number of 315 and its mechanical strength has to be considered.

Because the mechanical strength is not enough.

The aluminium housing has good thermal performance, is light and easy to machine.

Therefore, in most cases, aluminium-cased motors are preferred.

What is the feasibility of using 3D printing to produce Motor Housing?

The Impact of 3D Printing on Metal Castings: Design Feasibility

3D printing means that complex Motor Housings can be printed as a complete part. This saves casting preparation work. This also reduces potential cost and conventional assembly time for users and foundries on one side of the complex core assembly line, and the reduced cost of castings from these time savings can lead to more competitive advantages. This directly impacts the business model, ongoing costs and time to delivery to the end customer.

Designing for "Made" vs Designing for "Function"

Greater freedom in 3D printing sand mold design is closing the gap between designing for 'manufacturing' and designing for 'function'. Today, engineers can use finite element analysis (FEM) to optimize functionality and then 3D print the Motor Housing directly. This allows engine parts to be designed much faster and, more importantly, stronger parts, which can result in significant weight savings.
